Kookaburra Sightings Are Needed
To the Kawau community from Lizzy Perrett, Team Leader Animal Experiences, Auckland Zoo
Despite having multiple eyes and ears looking out for Kookaburra last year, we still came up empty and so have only one lone rescue bird living at the zoo. This year, we are determined to get cracking early on so I am troubling you all yet again for sightings of kookaburra nests (or suspected nesting areas) as soon as you see them and also for any other contacts that you may have that I can ask to get involved this year.
Just a reminder of what we hope to achieve:
1. Locate nesting areas and nesting trees (with your help)
2. Remove one clutch of eggs or chicks from the nest, leaving the parents alone.
3. Hand-rear young at the zoo.
4. Train for free-flight displays to tell the story of Kookaburras in Australia and New Zealand and showcase these amazing birds.
We cannot find them without you so please please, I would be so grateful if you would all put your feelers out with anyone you know in kookaburra areas and let us know as soon as you believe you may have found a nesting area.
